In 2023 the installation team were appointed to deliver the construction and installation of several technologies as part of a broader Decarbonization and Energy Efficiency Upgrade Program. The scheme aimed to reduce the carbon footprint, improve energy efficiency, and modernize building services through the integration of renewable technologies and electrical infrastructure upgrades. The project included the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels with battery storage, air source heat pumps (ASHPs), and the construction of a new plant room to house heating and energy systems. In addition, the entire building power and lighting system was rewired to accommodate the new low-carbon technologies and to ensure compliance with current electrical standards.

Project Deliverables

  • Solar panel array installation
  • Battery Storage installation
  • General lighting
  • Emergency lighting
  • Fire alarm reinstallation
  • Additional fire alarm interface units for gates
  • Connection of fire alarm system to interface unit in plant room and to BMS panel
  • Replacement of existing distribution boards in flats
  • New radial circuit to feed domestic water heater
  • New heating control circuit from existing fused spur to feed thermostat
  • RCBO protection to all final circuits
  • AFDD to all socket outlet circuits

Challenges and Solutions

The installation team faced a handful of challenges during the process of this project.

Working Around Tenants

One of the most difficult to manoeuvre being working around the tenants. As a fully occupied residential site, it was vital to minimize disruption to residents during installation works. The new equipment needed to be installed during the week without any interruptions to the client's day to day running of its multi tenanted building. The method of installation had to be revised numerous times until Heywood Electrical identified a solution to all of the issues that had been originally encountered.

Integration of Multiple Technologies

Another challenge faced was the integration of multiple new technologies in the installation. The PV, Battery Storage, ASHP, and the new wiring. As such a comprehensive system integration plan was developed through close collaboration between the electrical, mechanical, and controls design teams. The BMS platform was used to coordinate all systems under a unified control logic.
